Cyber Sunday Is Super Joke

Cyber Sunday is a super joke. On a day where the fans “Have the Power,” as stated on WWE.com, there is nothing to control.

It is every wrestling fans dream to play General Manager and make the decision as of to what the main event will be, but there was not much decision making that the WWE left the fans.

In this case, the fans get to vote for who they want to see face The Legend Killer, Randy Orton.

For a minute, consider his opponents. There are two fan favorites in The Heart Break Kid Shawn Michaels and Jeff Hardy who has been dubbed “The Rainbow Haired Warrior” thanks to Good Old JR. The lone heel to choose is the one and only Mr. Kennedy…Kennedy.

Over the past weeks, Hardy and Kennedy have been building up a rivalry of their own. When it was announced that those three would be competing for votes, Coach put Orton in three matches on RAW, one against each opponent.

First, Hardy came out, about to nail his signature Swanton, Kennedy comes out for the distraction, Orton followed with the RKO after Hardy fell off the top turnbuckle and was taken down for the 1-2-3.

Then, Kennedy faced Orton. After nailing his standing Senton Splash and looked to be heading for the three count over the champ, who interfered, non other than Hardy himself.

Hardy had been battling tooth and nail for weeks, back to several RAW events ago, when Hardy and Kennedy faced off in a non-title contest. After Hardy missed the Swanton Bomb and appeared to be on the losing end of the match, Kennedy made a lackadaisical cover that Hardy made Kennedy pay for as he hooked Kennedy’s arms, turned him over and pinned Kennedy’s shoulders to the mat for the quick win.

But back to the third and final match, the match that was made to build up the first in ring appearance for HBK since Orton “took him out” with a punt to the head. One week prior, Michaels officially returned to the WWE, interrupting Orton’s championship ceremony that ended up with Orton face down on the mat after Michaels tuned up the band and leveled Orton with some Sweet Chin Music.

As far as the match two weeks ago, it of course ended with interference, as you don’t want to ruin what you know will be the main event at your next PPV, so Kennedy attacked the ring, followed by Hardy. Hardy took care of Kennedy and for the second straight week, Orton was on the wrong end of a super kick by Michaels.

Then, last week was a tag match between enemies, as Michaels and Hardy teamed to face Orton and Kennedy. As the match was coming to a close, Michaels leaped over the top rope to take Orton out of contention for the remainder of the match. In the mean time, Kenney and Hardy battled it out in the ring, finishing with a Jeff Hardy’s body crashing on the sternum of Kennedy after perfectly executing the Swanton Bomb for the victory.

After the match however, Orton re-entered the ring and was about to deliver an RKO to potential challenger Jeff Hardy, but when he turned around HBK’s boot was planted squarely in his face for the third straight week leading into Cyber Sunday.

So, all these men battled, but who do the majority of fans want to see? It is the same man that the WWE has been building up for the past three weeks, and that is The Heart Break Kid Shawn Michaels.

The story line is clear. Hardy holds the Intercontinental Championship and he and Kennedy have been at each others throats for nearly the past month and everyone wants to see the return of the Show Stopper at Cyber Sunday to gain revenge on Orton and become the new WWE Champion.

So, why vote? It is already a foregone conclusion that HBK will once again be “The Headliner,” “The Main Event,” “The Show Stopper” again be in the spotlight. The script writers surely already have a detailed match laid out for an HBK and Orton, and will probably have an impromptu match for the IC Belt between Hardy and Kennedy, much like it was done a few years in 2005, when the event was called Taboo Tuesday.

In that case however, HBK, Kane, and the Big Show competed to be the fans number one choice to join the Champ John Cena and Kurt Angle in a triple threat match for the WWE Championship, and the two competitors left out of the main event knew they would end up as a tag team and try to gain some gold to wear around their waist as well, facing the reigning champs at the time, Cade and Murdoch.

HBK took nearly fifty percent of the votes to go on and be in the main event. It appears to be de ja vu all over again, just two years later.
